Squid is a soft-bodied marine mollusk with a cylindrical mantle, small fins, and long tentacles. Its flesh is mild and slightly sweet with a clean briny snap, turning tender with quick high-heat cooking but rubbery if overdone. Common retail forms include whole cleaned bodies, tubes and tentacles, and pre-cut rings for grilling, searing, frying, or braising. As an animal seafood, it is not vegetarian.\n\nCulinarily prominent around the Mediterranean and across East and Southeast Asia, it appears in dishes from Italian fritto misto to Japanese ika-yaki and Korean stir-fried squid. Global fisheries harvest squid by jigging and trawling, and frozen plus imported product supports steady year-round distribution.
