How RoughChop handles your data

RoughChop helps people discover recipes, save favorites, import recipes from links, upload recipe cards for OCR, and organize their own cooking library. This Privacy Policy explains what information RoughChop collects, how it is used, when it is shared, and what choices you have.

1. Information RoughChop collects
RoughChop collects information in a few different categories.
- Account information, such as your name, email address, password hash if you use email and password sign-in, and Google sign-in identity information if you sign in with Google.
- User content, such as recipes you create, recipes you import, recipe card images you upload, notes, stories, visibility settings, saved collections, favorites, and planner data.
- Recipe import data, such as URLs you submit, fetched page content or structured recipe data used to process the import, and import status or diagnostics.
- OCR and image data, such as uploaded recipe card images, processed copies of those images, extracted text, and recipe normalization results.
- Technical and session data needed to run the app, such as IP address, browser type, device information, authentication state, request logs, and error logs.
- Locally stored browser data, such as pantry state, planner state, cook mode progress, and recently viewed items stored in your browser.
2. How RoughChop collects information
- Directly from you when you create an account, sign in, save recipes, upload images, write reviews, submit recipe URLs, or update your preferences.
- From Google if you choose Google sign-in.
- From recipe websites when you ask RoughChop to import a recipe from a URL.
- From OCR and recipe-normalization workflows when you upload recipe card images.
- Automatically from your browser and device when needed to keep the service running securely and reliably.
3. How RoughChop uses information
- To create and manage your account and keep you signed in.
- To send verification emails, password reset emails, and other account-related messages.
- To store, display, and organize recipes, collections, planner entries, pantry data, and favorites.
- To import recipes from URLs and normalize recipe data into RoughChop's recipe format.
- To extract recipe information from uploaded recipe card images using OCR and AI-assisted processing.
- To support recipe search, meal planning, personalized suggestions, and related cooking features.
- To operate, secure, monitor, debug, and improve RoughChop.
- To prevent abuse, fraud, and unauthorized access, and to comply with legal obligations.
4. AI and automated processing
RoughChop uses automated systems, including AI-based services, to help process recipe content. This includes OCR of uploaded recipe cards, normalization of imported recipe data, and fallback interpretation of recipe pages that do not provide clean structured recipe markup.
This processing is used only to provide the features you ask RoughChop to perform. You should not upload or submit information you do not want processed for recipe import, OCR, or normalization.
5. When RoughChop shares information
RoughChop does not sell your personal information.
RoughChop may share information with service providers that help run the app, including:
- MongoDB Atlas for database hosting.
- Vercel and Vercel Blob for app hosting and file or image storage.
- OpenAI for OCR, recipe normalization, and certain import-related processing.
- Google for optional Google sign-in.
- Email delivery providers used to send verification and password reset messages.
RoughChop may also share information:
- When you choose to make recipes or collections public or unlisted.
- To comply with law, regulation, legal process, or valid government requests.
- To protect the rights, safety, and security of RoughChop, its users, or others.
- In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, asset sale, or similar transaction.
6. Public and shared content
RoughChop lets you control the visibility of user-created recipes and collections. Recipes or collections marked public or unlisted may be visible to other people through shared links or public pages. Private content is not intended to be shown publicly.
You are responsible for what you choose to make public or share with others.
7. Cookies, local storage, and similar technologies
RoughChop uses cookies and similar technologies that are necessary for core site operation, including authentication, session handling, and security.
RoughChop also stores some information locally in your browser, including pantry data, planner state, cook mode progress, and recently viewed items. This local data may remain on your device until you clear it through your browser settings or app actions.
8. Data retention
RoughChop keeps information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, operate the app, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and comply with legal obligations.
- Account information is generally retained while your account remains active.
- Recipes, uploads, reviews, planner entries, and related user content are generally retained until you delete them or delete your account.
- Operational logs, backups, and cached copies may persist for a limited period after deletion.
9. Your choices and rights
You can make a number of choices inside RoughChop today.
- You can edit or delete your own user recipes and collections.
- You can control whether your recipes are private, unlisted, or public.
- You can update your account profile, password, timezone, and cooking preferences.
- You can request or initiate account deletion through RoughChop's account settings.
- You can control browser-side local storage through your browser settings.
Depending on where you live, you may also have additional privacy rights, such as the right to access, correct, or delete certain information. Privacy questions and requests can be sent to roughchop@gmail.com.
10. Children's privacy
RoughChop is not directed to children under 13, and RoughChop does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to RoughChop, contact roughchop@gmail.com.
11. Security
RoughChop uses reasonable technical and organizational measures to help protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so RoughChop cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. International processing
RoughChop and its service providers may process information in countries other than your own. If you use RoughChop outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in jurisdictions with different privacy laws.
13. Changes to this policy
RoughChop may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If material changes are made, RoughChop will update the effective date above and may provide additional notice when appropriate.
