Brown rice is whole rice with the bran and germ intact, giving tan grains with a slightly chewy texture. It cooks to plump, distinct grains with a nutty aroma and toasty flavor, and holds its shape in pilafs, stir-fries, and grain bowls. Sold as long-, medium-, and short-grain, it is also available as quick-cooking or parboiled.
Brown rice is minimally milled Oryza sativa, a cereal domesticated in Asia that spread worldwide through trade and cultivation. It features in Japanese genmai preparations, South and Southeast Asian meals, and modern whole-grain cooking across North America and Europe.
