Red wine is a fermented grape beverage with hues from ruby to deep garnet. Made by fermenting dark-skinned grapes with their skins, it shows fruit, tannin, and acidity in varying balance from light-bodied to full. In the kitchen it deglazes pans, reduces into glossy sauces, enriches braises, and poaches fruit; sold primarily in bottles and boxes. Vegetarian suitability may vary due to traditional fining with egg whites or isinglass.
It developed along the Mediterranean and Caucasus winegrowing belt and spread through Europe before global adoption. Red wine anchors French, Italian, and Spanish cuisines and now comes from vineyards worldwide across cool and warm regions.
