Ground coffee is roasted coffee beans milled to a coarse, medium, or fine particle size. It has a roasty aroma of toasted nuts, and extraction depends on grind size and contact time; it blooms when first wetted and is used to brew drip, espresso, and cold brew, and to flavor rubs, syrups, and desserts. It is sold in grinds matched to brew methods, in regular or decaffeinated forms.
Coffee originated in Ethiopia and spread through Yemen and the wider Arabian world before reaching Europe and the Americas, and today it is cultivated across the tropics. Beans are harvested, fermented, dried, hulled, and roasted before grinding, which is done near packaging or at point of sale.
