Instant espresso powder is a finely milled, dehydrated coffee concentrate made from brewed espresso. It dissolves instantly, delivering a deep, smoky aroma and assertive coffee bitterness in small doses. Cooks use it to deepen chocolate desserts, flavor buttercreams and ice creams, and season dry rubs or sauces; it’s sold as espresso powder or instant espresso.
It grew from early instant coffee technology and the espresso tradition that emerged in Italy in the 20th century. Modern versions are brewed espresso that’s spray- or freeze-dried and then ground, popular in European baking and widely adopted in North American pastry kitchens.
