Cantaloupe is a round, netted-skinned melon with orange, juicy flesh. Its flavor is sweet and floral with a tender, dripping bite; it shines in fruit salads, smoothies, and chilled soups. Common retail forms include whole melons and pre-cut cubes or wedges.
Cantaloupe descends from muskmelons domesticated in Persia and the Indian subcontinent and spread through the Mediterranean. The North American netted type became widespread through 19th–20th century cultivation, and today production spans the United States, Mexico, and Central America.
