Bell pepper is a thick-walled, hollow, blocky pepper with glossy skin in green, red, yellow, or orange. Its juicy crunch and mild sweetness hold up to grilling, roasting, sauteing, and quick stir-fries; it softens and sweetens further with heat and chars beautifully. Common uses include raw slices for salads and dips, aromatic bases like sofrito, and stuffed or roasted halves; sold whole by color or pre-cut.
Native to Central and South America, Capsicum annuum was domesticated millennia ago and spread to Europe via Spanish trade, then worldwide. Bell-type varieties became staples in Mediterranean, Latin American, and many Asian cuisines, and are now widely grown in open fields and modern greenhouse systems.
