Overnight oats are a creamy, no-cook breakfast made by soaking rolled oats in milk until they become tender and spoonable. The result is cool, lightly sweet, and comforting, with a pleasant chew balanced by yogurt’s richness if used. It’s endlessly adaptable, taking well to fresh fruit, nuts, and spices added just before serving.
The technique draws from Swiss bircher muesli, which softened oats in dairy and fruit for a nourishing, ready-to-eat meal. In recent decades, the method spread globally under the name “overnight oats,” popularized for its convenience, portability, and make-ahead appeal. Today it bridges tradition and modern prep, offering a reliable base that suits many palates and routines.
