The hurricane is a bold, fruit-forward rum cocktail known for its vibrant color, lush tropical aromas, and refreshing sweetness balanced by bright citrus. Served traditionally over crushed ice in a curvy hurricane glass, it drinks big and celebratory while staying crisp and lively. Its hallmark flavors are a blend of molasses-rich rum, tangy passion fruit, and zesty lemon, finishing with a long, cooling chill from all that ice.
Born in 1940s New Orleans at Pat O’Brien’s, the hurricane emerged when bars had to move surplus rum by the case. The drink took its name from the hurricane-lamp–shaped glass it was served in and quickly became a Bourbon Street staple and a Mardi Gras icon. Over time, countless variations appeared, but the core identity—two rums, passion fruit, and citrus over crushed ice—remains the defining signature.
