Honey mustard is a creamy, tangy-sweet sauce with a gentle heat from mustard and a rounded floral sweetness from honey. It’s versatile enough to work as a dip for chicken, pretzels, and vegetables, a sandwich spread, or thinned slightly for salad dressing. The texture should be smooth and spoonable, with a balanced flavor that’s bright but not sharp, sweet but not cloying.

The pairing of honey and mustard dates back to ancient cuisines, with records of mustard sweetened by honey in Roman texts. The modern American-style honey mustard became widely popular in the late 20th century, especially as a dipping sauce in casual restaurants. Today it remains a staple condiment across the U.S., adaptable to regional tastes and used for glazes, dressings, and everyday dipping.
