Dalgona Coffee

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, combine instant coffee, granulated sugar, and hot water.

2. Whisk vigorously or beat with a hand mixer on medium-high until the mixture is very thick, glossy, and holds medium-stiff peaks, 3–5 minutes with a mixer or 8–12 minutes by hand.

3. Divide ice cubes between two 12-ounce glasses and pour whole milk into each.

4. Spoon the whipped coffee evenly over the milk. Serve with a spoon or straw and stir to taste.

Dalgona Coffee is a layered drink of cold milk and a thick, glossy foam made by whipping instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. The foam is sweet, aromatic, and slightly bitter, floating like a meringue over iced milk for a striking look and creamy texture. Stirring it together yields a café-style iced latte with a dessert-like finish that’s both refreshing and indulgent.

The drink surged to global fame from South Korea, where its light-brown cap evoked dalgona, a traditional honeycomb toffee. While the viral name is Korean, the technique of whisking instant coffee with sugar and water echoes earlier “beaten coffee” traditions found in parts of South Asia. Its modern popularity reflects a cross-cultural moment: simple pantry ingredients transformed into a photogenic treat shared worldwide.
