Aperol Spritz is a bright, bittersweet aperitivo cocktail known for its sunset-orange hue and refreshing, lightly sparkling profile. Prosecco provides crisp bubbles, Aperol adds orange and gentian bitterness with a touch of sweetness, and a splash of soda lifts the drink to a quaffable, low-ABV sipper. Served over plenty of ice in a large wine glass and finished with an orange slice, it’s light, aromatic, and designed to open the appetite.
Originating in northern Italy, the spritz traces back to the 19th century when Habsburg soldiers in the Veneto diluted local wine with water. Aperol, created in Padua in 1919, later became the defining liqueur for the modern version. The Aperol Spritz rose to national popularity in the late 20th century and has since become a global emblem of Italian aperitivo culture, especially associated with Venice and the Veneto.
