Triple sec is a clear, orange-flavored liqueur with a transparent appearance. It tastes sweet with crisp citrus peel bitterness and an oily orange-zest perfume, adding orange aroma, sweetness, and lift to drinks. Commonly used in margaritas, sidecars, and cosmopolitans, and sold at various proofs in clear bottles.
Developed in 19th-century France, triple sec is made by distilling neutral spirit with dried bitter and sweet orange peels, then sweetening and proofing. It spread through European and American cocktail culture and is now produced worldwide in styles ranging from dry to syrupy.
