Rye whiskey is a distilled spirit made primarily from rye grain, typically amber to deep gold in color. It delivers a spicy, peppery snap with a dry finish and notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak; it excels in stirred cocktails and robust mixers and can deglaze pans or glaze meats. Bottles commonly range 40-50% ABV, including straight and bottled-in-bond styles.\n\nIt developed in North America, notably in the rye-growing Mid-Atlantic, and spread across the U.S. and Canada; U.S. straight rye uses a mash bill of at least 51% rye and ages in new charred oak. Modern production mills and mashes the grain, ferments, distills in column or pot stills, and matures in warehouses before bottling.
