A hoagie roll is a long, soft sandwich roll with a tender crumb and thin golden crust. It has a mild, slightly sweet wheat flavor and enough chew to hold saucy fillings without falling apart. Commonly sold in 6–12 inch lengths, plain or seeded, it splits cleanly for piling on meats, cheeses, and vegetables, and toasts well for a crisp edge.
The style grew out of Italian-American bakery loaves in the Northeastern United States, especially Philadelphia, where names like hoagie, hero, and grinder took hold. Modern rolls are produced by both artisan and commercial bakeries using straight-dough or prefermented methods and are now standard in delis nationwide.
