Instructions

1. Preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat until warm, about 2 minutes.

2. Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice, reaching the edges.

3. Place 2 slices of bread buttered-side down in the skillet; top evenly with the American cheese, then cap with the remaining bread, buttered-side up.

4. Cook until the first side is deep golden brown and the cheese is beginning to melt, 3–4 minutes; adjust heat down if browning too quickly.

5. Flip carefully and cook until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted and stretchy, 2–4 minutes.

6. Transfer to a board and rest 1 minute to set; slice and serve hot.

Grilled cheese is a simple, comforting sandwich featuring crisp, browned bread and a molten, gooey cheese interior. The contrast of a buttery, toasted crust with a soft, stretchy center makes it both nostalgic and deeply satisfying. It pairs well with tomato soup or pickles and is endlessly craveable for its rich dairy flavor and tidy, handheld form.

Rooted in American home and diner cooking, grilled cheese rose to prominence in the mid-20th century alongside pre-sliced bread and widely available processed cheese. Its popularity surged during and after World War II, when economical, quick, hot meals were prized in cafeterias and households. Over time it has inspired variations with different breads, cheeses, and add-ins, yet the core idea—bread, fat, and melted cheese cooked on a flat surface—remains iconic.
