Instructions

  1. Preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat until warm, about 2 minutes.
  2. Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice, reaching the edges.
  3. Place 2 slices of bread buttered-side down in the skillet; top evenly with the American cheese, then cap with the remaining bread, buttered-side up.
  4. Cook until the first side is deep golden brown and the cheese is beginning to melt, 3–4 minutes; adjust heat down if browning too quickly.
  5. Flip carefully and cook until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted and stretchy, 2–4 minutes.
  6. Transfer to a board and rest 1 minute to set; slice and serve hot.
