Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp fresh gingerfinely grated
  • 1/8 tsp black pepperfinely ground
  • 4 tsp honey
Golden milk

Instructions

1. Finely grate the ginger and measure the turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper.

2. In a small saucepan, combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, grated ginger, and black pepper. Whisk to disperse the spices.

3. Warm over medium-low heat until steaming, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Simmer 5–7 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the milk turns deep golden and smells aromatic; do not let it boil vigorously.

4. Remove from heat and let stand 2–3 minutes to settle and infuse.

5. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into two mugs to remove the ginger and any spice sediment.

6. Stir in the honey until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired. Serve hot.

Golden milk, known in many Indian homes as haldi doodh, is a warm, soothing drink with a vivid saffron-gold hue from turmeric. Its flavor is gently earthy and slightly peppery, rounded by creamy milk and soft spice notes. People enjoy it for its comforting texture and the way the spices bloom into the warmth, making it both a nightcap and a cold-weather staple.

Rooted in Ayurveda, turmeric milk has been sipped across the Indian subcontinent for generations as a household remedy and everyday tonic. Traditionally it is as simple as milk simmered with turmeric and a touch of sweetener, sometimes enriched with black pepper, ginger, or ghee. In recent years it spread globally under the name “golden milk,” inspiring café adaptations while preserving the core idea of infused milk and turmeric.
