Blue Cheese Dressing
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
- 1 clove garlic – finely grated
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper – freshly ground
- 5 oz blue cheese – crumbled

Instructions
1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, white wine vinegar, garlic, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy, 30–60 seconds.
2. Add the blue cheese and mash about half into the base with a fork while folding in the rest to keep small crumbles throughout.
3. Cover and chill until flavors meld and the dressing slightly thickens, 30–60 minutes. Stir before serving and keep refrigerated.
Blue cheese dressing is a rich, tangy, and creamy salad dressing and dip with distinct salty pops from crumbled blue cheese. It clings beautifully to crisp greens and raw vegetables, and its bold flavor stands up to charred or spicy foods. The texture should be lush yet spoonable, with a balance of smooth body and small cheese crumbles for contrast.
In the United States, blue cheese dressing rose to prominence in the mid-20th century alongside steakhouse staples and the iceberg wedge salad. Early versions often used Roquefort or domestic blue cheeses and a mayonnaise-sour cream base thinned with buttermilk. It became a classic pairing for Buffalo wings and bar fare, and remains a grocery and restaurant mainstay while still being quick and rewarding to make from scratch at home.
