Agua de Piña

Instructions

1. Peel, core, and cut the pineapple into chunks, measuring 4 cups.

2. Add the pineapple chunks, granulated sugar, and 3 cups of the water to a blender. Blend on high until very smooth, 45–60 seconds.

3. Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large pitcher and pour in the blended mixture. Press with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible; discard the remaining dry pulp.

4. Stir in the remaining 3 cups water until evenly combined. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 1 hour.

5. Stir the agua de piña (natural separation is normal). Fill glasses with ice and pour the drink over the ice. Serve cold.

Agua de Piña is a refreshing Mexican agua fresca made by blending ripe pineapple with water and a touch of sugar, then straining for a silky, thirst-quenching drink. It delivers bright tropical aroma and gentle sweetness, with a clean finish that makes it ideal for hot weather. Served icy cold, it’s light, aromatic, and easy to sip alongside everyday meals or as a standalone refresher.

Rooted in the broader tradition of aguas frescas in Mexico, this drink reflects pre-Hispanic customs of combining fruit with water to create cooling beverages for markets and homes. Pineapple, cultivated in tropical regions of Mexico, became a natural fit for this style thanks to its fragrance and juiciness. Today, agua de piña is a staple offering from street vendors and fondas, celebrated for simplicity, seasonality, and pure fruit flavor without fermentation (distinct from tepache).
