Yeast nutrient is a fine, odorless powder or granular blend of mineral salts and nutrients. It dissolves cleanly and is added to wort, must, or cider to maintain vigorous fermentation and minimize off-aromas, leaving virtually no taste or aroma. Typical blends contain diammonium phosphate with trace minerals, amino acids, or yeast-derived components, sold as powder or small pellets.

Modern yeast nutrients developed in professional winemaking and brewing during the mid-20th century before spreading to home fermentation. They are used widely in wine, mead, cider, and some beers, with formulations adjusted to the nutrient needs of different fermentations.
