Ranch dressing is a creamy, tangy, herb-studded sauce prized for its cool balance of dairy richness and savory aromatics. The combination of buttermilk, mayonnaise, and sour cream gives it body and a clean lactic twang, while garlic, onion, and fresh herbs add familiar depth. It’s as at home on a crisp green salad as it is alongside cut vegetables, chicken wings, or even pizza crust, making it one of the most versatile American condiments.

Created in the mid-20th century, ranch dressing traces back to Steve Henson, who served it to guests at Hidden Valley Ranch in California. Its popularity spread first through seasoned dry packets and later as a bottled staple, eventually becoming the most consumed salad dressing in the United States. Today, it stands as a defining flavor in American food culture, evolving into countless regional and household variations while retaining its core profile.
