Mint Julep
Ingredients
- 8 leaves mint leaves
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- 2 tsp water
- 2 1/2 ounces bourbon
- 2 cups crushed ice
- mint sprig – for garnish

Instructions
1. In a chilled julep cup, add the mint leaves, granulated sugar, and water; gently muddle just until the leaves release fragrance, 10–15 seconds (do not shred).
2. Add the bourbon and stir to dissolve the sugar.
3. Pack the cup tightly with the crushed ice, stirring until the cup frosts, 10–15 seconds, and mound more ice above the rim to form a dome.
4. Slap the mint sprig between your palms and nestle it near the rim; position a short straw beside it and serve immediately.
The mint julep is an icy, aromatic bourbon cocktail built around fresh mint, a touch of sugar, and a mountain of finely crushed ice. Its appeal lies in the contrast: bold, oaky whiskey softened by gentle sweetness and the cooling lift of mint, all delivered in a cup that frosts over as you sip. The crushed ice chills the drink rapidly and provides sustained dilution, yielding a smooth, refreshing balance from first sip to last.
Rooted in the American South, the julep evolved from early medicinal and brandy-based juleps into a bourbon standard by the 19th century, particularly in Virginia and Kentucky. It became inseparable from Kentucky Derby tradition in the 20th century, where silver or pewter julep cups and abundant spearmint underscore ceremony and hospitality. Though countless riffs exist, the enduring template remains mint, sugar, bourbon, and crushed ice, assembled with a restrained muddle and an aromatic mint bouquet.
