Avocado Toast

Instructions

1. Toast the sourdough bread slices until deeply golden and crisp, 3–5 minutes.

2. Halve, pit, and scoop the avocado into a bowl. Add the lemon juice and kosher salt, then mash with a fork until mostly smooth with some small chunks, 30–60 seconds.

3. Spread the avocado mixture evenly over the hot toast.

4. Finish with black pepper and red pepper flakes, then drizzle the extra-virgin olive oil over the top.

5. Serve immediately while the toast is still crisp.

Avocado toast is a simple, open-faced toast piled with creamy mashed avocado and a few bright seasonings. The appeal lies in the contrast: crisp, warm bread against rich, cool avocado, lifted by citrus, salt, and a hint of heat. It’s satisfying yet light, easy to personalize, and fits as well for breakfast as it does for a quick lunch or snack.

Though it surged in popularity through café culture in the 2010s, the idea of putting avocado on toast has earlier roots. Variations appeared in California and Australia, where avocados and café brunch culture flourished, and historical mentions of avocado on bread date back to the early 20th century. Today, avocado toast is a global staple of modern brunch, evolving with countless toppings while remaining anchored by good bread and ripe fruit.
