  1. Rinse the lettuce leaves and pat dry. Cut 2 thin slices from the tomato.
  2. Lay out the 2 slices of sandwich bread. Spread mayonnaise on one slice and Dijon mustard on the other.
  3. Fold and layer the 4 ounces of ham evenly over the mayonnaise-coated slice.
  4. Add the tomato slices on top of the ham and season with the black pepper.
  5. Place the lettuce leaves over the tomatoes, then close the sandwich with the mustard-coated slice, pressing lightly.
  6. Cut in half if desired and serve immediately with pickles.
